Tirupati is one of the most ancient and sacred pilgrimage places in India visited by the tourists from India as well as abroad. Tirupati is located near Srikalahasti in the state of Andra Pradesh. The name Tirupati implies the 'Lord of Lakshmi' as is given to the village on the Venkat hill, the dwelling of Lord Venkateswara. However, Tirupati is the town and transport hub at the bottom of the hill. The hill adjacent to the temple is called 'Tirumala' or the 'sacred hill'. The 'Tirupati temple' is said to be the most crowded one in the world, surpassing even Rome, Jerusalem, and Mecca in the number of pilgrims visiting it every year. The tradition unique to this temple is the sacrifice of the hairs and shaving of head done on the fulfilment of a wish.
